Dallas City Council Makes a Major Move

Rudy Bush of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Dallas City Council Public Safety Committee voted unanimously to let the Dallas County Sheriff's handle accidents on I-30 and freeways in southern Dallas.

As Assistant Chief David Brown mentioned at yesterday's meetings, this is a significant move that puts 18 experienced DPD officers back on the streets. Combined with this month's opening of the South Central Division and Police Station, this will give southern Dallas a major boost with respect to safety.

The County will require wreckers to respond to accidents within 15 minutes. In addition to the safety benefits, this will reduce pollution since accident-related traffic jams tie up our freeways for hours.

The entire council must approve the measure on November 12th, which is certain.
